How to Apply

• Full-time and part-time K-12 educators in public, charter, religious, and private schools who are U.S. citizens or have been in residence in the U.S. or territory for at least three years.
• Teachers in K-12 schools maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense are also encouraged to apply.
• Homeschool teachers
• Museum Educators:  All museum educators are welcome to apply, especially those seeking to better document and teach the African American history of their community.

• Foreign nationals teaching at schools abroad.
• Anyone who is delinquent in repaying a federal debt including taxes, student loans, and child support payments.
• Anyone who has been disbarred or suspended by any federal department or agency. 
• Anyone who has taken a class with either Professors Mixon or Piehler.

Yes.  You can only apply to a total of two summer workshops or institutes held in 2023 but you can only attend one.

A committee of educators will review all completed applications and make their recommendation to the project director on who should be invited to attend the workshop.  They will use the following criteria:

• Professional background in terms of education and teaching assignments. For museum educators, preference will be given to those who outline how they think that attending the workshop will impact their interaction with K-12 teachers and students.
• Interest in the topic and what you can contribute to the workshop.
• The impact attending the workshop will have on your teaching and students.
• At least three spots for each workshop session will be reserved for new teachers with five years or fewer years of experience in the classroom.
• Candidates will reflect a diverse pool of educators from across the United States.
• All factors being equal, we will give preference to those who have not had the opportunity to participate in a Landmarks workshop or NEH teacher seminar in the past.

Applicants will receive their stipend after completing the workshop.
