There are at least two Landmark visits that will entail walking outside.

Yes, the hotel and all of the landmark locations will have WiFi.

No, if you are accepted into the workshop we will be providing you copies of all the necessary readings. We plan to mail you several books in advance of your arriving in Thomasville. Other readings will be available via the workshop website.

Within a year of the workshop ending, all participants will submit for our posting on our workshop website, a lesson plan that draws on the insights gained from your week in Thomasville. Our workshop aims not only to help you understand the historic landmarks of Thomasville, but also provide you the tools to explore the landmarks in your own community related to African American history.

Within Thomasville and the surrounding area, there are several parks, downtown shopping, a movie theater, YMCA’s, and other attractions. Albany, Georgia (about an hour away) is home to an aquarium, civil rights museum, and art museum. In Tallahassee, Florida (also about an hour away) there are several museums, including the Tallahassee Museum that features a small outdoor zoo, playground, and historic buildings. Beaches along the Gulf of Mexico are approximately a 2–3-hour drive from Thomasville. If you bring your family with you to Thomasville, they are welcome to attend the barbecue reception that will begin the week of activities.

During the day expect temperatures in the high 90s with lots of humidity. In planning the schedule, we are aware of the heat and our schedule takes this into account, especially when we have outside activities. On most days, the bulk of our time will be spent indoors.

No. But if your school district requires you to participate in professional development programming, the Project Director would be glad to provide you a formal letter attesting to your completing the workshop along with a summary of the activities you participated in.

Guests can travel with an applicant but they will not be permitted to attend the workshop related events and activities.
